Career tech education opportunities are expanding in Walker County.

The Heman Drummond Center of Innovation is a partnership between the Walker Area Community Foundation, Bevill State Community College, Jasper City Schools and Walker County Schools.

Once completed, the building will offer Jasper City and Walker County students 120,000 square feet of workable space, expanding already established career tech opportunities offered by the school systems now.

"We know that in many ways this is a chance for our students to break the cycle and to have a better quality of life, and that's our goal," said Dennis Willingham, Walker County Schools superintendent. "So, when students leave our school system they can enter into the workforce or college, and they can have a better quality of life on the other end."

Willingham said the center will be a one of its kind facility, offering workforce training to students while hopefully bringing business to Walker County too.

"Workforce development is where it's at in the state of Alabama right now and we are wanting to be on the front edge of that, so what we are building here is unlike any other makeup anywhere in the nation," said Willingham.

Willingham said due to a pre-existing partnership between Walker County Schools and Bevill State Community College, Walker County School students will be able to enroll in career tech courses free of charge.

Construction of the Heman Drummond Center of Innovation is expected to be complete by Fall 2026.
